Roof Snow Removal by Roofers
We take the snow load off your roof before it turns into ice dams, leaks or damaged gutters, without tearing up the shingles.
- 1Heat escapes into the attic and melts the snow from underneath.
- 2The melt water runs down and refreezes at the cold eave. That ridge of ice is the dam.
- 3New melt pools behind the dam, backs up under the shingles and leaks inside.
Why It Matters
Snow Left on the Roof Becomes Ice at the Eaves
A deep layer of snow is insulation sitting on your roof. Heat from the attic melts the bottom of it, the water runs to the cold edge and freezes, and a few days later you have an ice dam. The more snow up there, the more water there is to feed it.
Clearing the eaves, valleys and the areas over heated rooms after a storm cuts that off before it starts. It's far cheaper than steaming out a dam later, and much cheaper than drywall.
Roofs That Need It First
- Flat and low-slope roofs that don't shed snow
- Porch, garage and addition roofs
- Shaded north-facing slopes
- Valleys where two roof planes meet
- Older homes with shallow attics
- Any roof that already had ice dams last winter

Snow & Ice Questions
When should snow come off the roof?+
After a big or wet storm, when snow keeps piling up between storms, or when you start seeing ice forming at the eaves. Flat and low-slope roofs, porch roofs and the shaded north side of a house hold snow the longest and need watching first.
Can I just use a roof rake myself?+
From the ground, on a single-story eave, a roof rake is fine for clearing the first few feet. Don't climb onto a snowy roof or work from a ladder in the snow. That's where people get hurt, and where shingles get torn.
Will you take all the snow off?+
We clear what's causing the problem: the eaves, valleys and the areas over living space where ice forms. Leaving a thin layer of snow on the shingles protects them from shovels and rakes, so we don't scrape down to the surface.
Is snow load a structural risk?+
On most pitched roofs in good shape, a normal winter is fine. Heavy wet snow on a flat roof, an older roof or one with sagging or creaking needs attention. Call us and we'll give you an honest answer about yours.
